Rowan T. Chlebowski, a co-author of the study and a medical oncologist at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, has published several important research articles on the links between estrogen plus progestin therapy and breast cancer.
The study found among postmenopausal women with prior hysterectomy who had used estrogen therapy for about six years and then stopped, longer-term follow-up indicated that the increased risk of stroke seen during the intervention period had dissipated, the decreased risk of hip fracture was not maintained, while the decreased risk of breast cancer persisted. You can read the full article here.
Following are Dr. Chlebowski's comments:
"The reduced breast cancer incidence the study found among women taking estrogen alone continues the trend we previously reported. Importantly, these findings are very different from the effects of taking combined estrogen plus progestin therapy. Our studies have found the combination of estrogen plus progestin increases both breast cancer incidence and breast cancer mortality."
